Canada's Kinova Robotics, based in Boisbriand, Quebec, grew out of assistive robotics: its early JACO arm went to people with limited mobility, and today the company mainly offers the Gen3 research and industrial line, available in 6- and 7-axis versions with a 4 kg payload, plus the cheaper Gen3 Lite.

Kinova's strengths are integrated torque sensors and a closed control loop running at 1 kHz, which makes the arms a popular choice in university labs, rehabilitation research centers and applications that need precise, lightweight manipulation. In that field it competes more with Franka Emika than with the heavier cobots from Universal Robots. Two models are described here: the Gen3 (7-axis) and the Gen3 Lite.

The founding year, financials and distribution in Poland have not been confirmed. The brand remains best known in academic and research circles and less so in large-scale industrial deployments.

History and development

Boisbriand, Quebec, is where Kinova Robotics comes from, a company that grew out of assistive robotics. Its early JACO arm went to people with limited mobility to help with everyday tasks. That heritage still shows: the design is lightweight and built for working safely next to people. Today Kinova mainly offers the Gen3 research and industrial line, in 6- and 7-axis versions with a 4 kg payload, plus the cheaper Gen3 Lite. Its strengths are integrated torque sensors and a control loop running at 1 kHz. The founding year, funding and headcount have not been confirmed, so we do not state them. What we do know is that the brand is well recognized in academic and research circles and less so in large industrial rollouts. For an explanation of what a collaborative robot is, see “What Is a Cobot and How Does It Differ from an Industrial Robot”, and for the product class see the category “Cobots”. For broader background on arms in science, see also “Educational Robots for Schools and Universities”. This pedigree still sets the brand apart from manufacturers that started on the factory floor and explains the emphasis on safety and light weight. That is why Kinova arms turn up in laboratories more often than on production lines.

Portfolio

Kinova Gen3 is a seven-axis research arm with a 4 kg payload and 902 mm reach. Standard B2B pricing falls in the range of USD 30,000 to 35,000 (roughly PLN 135,700 (≈ EUR 31,040) at our conversion), and special configurations reach USD 50,000. It is used in research, assistive robotics and laboratory automation. Kinova Gen3 Lite is the cheaper 6-axis version: 5.4 kg weight, 0.5 kg payload, 760 mm reach. It is meant for education and light manipulation, and its price and full specifications are not confirmed. The gap is huge: the Gen3 is a professional tool, the Lite is teaching equipment. If you are learning kinematics, start with “Degrees of Freedom (DOF) in Humanoid Robots”, and for choosing a gripper see Robotiq and OnRobot. School equipment is covered in “Educational robots”. An important note for buyers: prices given as ranges mean the final amount depends on configuration and accessories, not on a list price. So ask for a full quote including gripper and software. To compare classes, also see “What Is a Cobot and How Does It Differ from an Industrial Robot” and the guide “How to Read a Robot Datasheet”, which helps you read parameters such as reach and payload from a datasheet.

Market position

Kinova plays in the research-arm segment, where precision and openness decide the choice, not price. Our reading is that its rival is Franka Robotics with the Franka Research 3 rather than the heavier cobots from Universal Robots, such as the UR5e. The same class includes Flexiv Robotics with the Flexiv Rizon 4, as well as Dobot and Elephant Robotics in the educational class. We have no data on revenue, valuation or specific customers. The manufacturer's own description points to a strong position in academia, but without sales figures. The strengths are light weight and integrated torque sensors; the weaker point is its position in large industrial deployments. We know of no named industrial customers, so we do not judge the scale of its commercial business. In academia, though, the brand is well known, as the manufacturer's descriptions and trade portals show. For a comparison of research and industrial arms, it is worth reading “Cobot or Industrial Robot”.

Presence in Poland

Kinova's distribution in Poland is not confirmed, and neither model has a listed domestic availability. We also know of no specific Polish universities using Kinova arms. Rehabilitation labs and robotics teams would be natural buyers, but that is our assessment, not a fact. Polish companies and research centers are listed at “Polish Robotics Companies”, and purchasing guidance is in “How to Buy a Cobot Step by Step” and in the section “Schools”. Before you place an order, settle who will be responsible for service and spare parts, because without a local partner a repair means shipping abroad and weeks of downtime, and that has to be built into your schedule.

Editorial verdict

The Kinova Gen3 is a lightweight arm for the lab and for assistive uses, not for palletizing. The Gen3 Lite works well for learning, but its 0.5 kg payload is a limitation. With no Polish distributor, ask about service support before ordering. Compare Kinova Gen3 with Franka Research 3. Before buying, ask about service terms in Europe and about the full configuration with gripper, because the price of the arm alone is only the start of the bill.
