Denmark's Universal Robots of Odense, founded in 2005, is a pioneer of collaborative robot arms (cobots) and has belonged to the US company Teradyne since 2015. It is the market leader in 6-axis cobots for light industrial automation, with the widest distributor network in the world among makers of this category.

Seven e-Series models are described here, from the UR3e (3 kg payload, price USD 35,000 or about PLN 135,670 (≈ EUR 31,090 at NBP rate 4.3641 of 21 October 2026)) to the UR30 (30 kg payload), all on sale and all available in Poland through elmark.com.pl.

Compared with the Yaskawa Motoman HC, which relies on torque sensing and IP67 variants for washdown, Universal Robots competes above all on its worldwide installed base and the maturity of its integrator ecosystem. The manufacturer does not publish a full price list for most models beyond the UR3e, which makes a direct cost comparison across the family difficult.

History and development

When in 2005 three partners in Odense, Esben Østergaard, Kasper Støy and Kristian Kassow, founded Universal Robots, the industrial robot market belonged to heavy, expensive machines behind cages. The idea was the opposite: an arm that is light, cheap and so simple to operate that a small company without an automation team could handle it. The first product, the UR5, reached the market in 2008 and is sometimes called the first commercially viable cobot; it was sold first in Denmark and Germany. In 2015 the American Teradyne bought the Danish company for USD 285 million, giving it capital backing and a sales network. According to Wikipedia, more than 100,000 cobots have been sold to date and the company employs over a thousand people. The "e" line arrived in 2018 with the UR3e, the UR16e joined in 2019, the UR20 in 2022, and the UR30, the heaviest in the family, in 2023. In May 2025 UR showed three new models, the UR7e, UR12e and UR15, which replace or supplement older designs: the UR7e takes over the role of the UR5e, the UR12e follows the UR10e, and the UR15 is the brand's fastest cobot, with a TCP speed of up to 5 m/s. It is the story of a pioneer that steadily expands its family instead of changing its philosophy.

Portfolio

The UR family reads like a multiplication table: the number in the name is roughly the payload in kilograms. At the bottom stands UR3e (3 kg, 540 mm reach), for electronics assembly and lab work. The middle tier holds UR5e (5 kg, 850 mm), for years the brand's most popular model, and its successor UR7e with a 7.5 kg payload. Higher up work UR10e (12.5 kg, 1300 mm) and UR12e, which replaces it from May 2025. Heavier tasks go to UR16e (16 kg, since 2019), UR15 (the fastest, 15 to 17.5 kg), UR20 (20 kg, 1750 mm reach, for palletizing and welding) and the top model UR30, with 30 kg payload and 63.5 kg dead weight. Each has a force-torque sensor, and we describe most of them as ready for palletizing or machine tending. Public prices exist only for the UR3e and UR5e (about USD 35,000) and the UR10e (about USD 45,000); the rest are on request, and beyond the arm you must add a gripper and integration. Market position

Universal Robots is the reference point for the whole cobot category. The brand has the widest distributor and integrator network in the world among makers of this class, and more than 100,000 arms sold is a scale that no younger rival has yet matched. The greatest threats come from two sides. From Asia come cheaper competitors: JAKA Robotics, AUBO Robotics and Doosan Robotics, the last with a strong position in cobots with payloads from 20 kg. From Japan and Europe the pressure comes from FANUC with its CRX series, Yaskawa Electric, Kassow Robots and Franka Robotics. UR's advantage is a mature ecosystem: hundreds of accessories, grippers and integrator programs. Its weakness is prices that can double relative to the arm alone once you have a complete cell, and the fact that a vision system usually has to be bought separately, whereas at Techman Robot it is standard. The owner is Teradyne, listed on NASDAQ (TER). Market background: “Cobot or Industrial Robot”.

Presence in Poland

Universal Robots sells in Poland through distributors, not directly. We track two channels: Elmark Automatyka S.A. of Warsaw (ul. Bukowińska) and the manufacturer's own site with a regional contact for Central and Eastern Europe, which has no public, dedicated list of distributors in Poland. We convert the prices of the UR5e and UR10e into zlotys from dollars: about PLN 127,600 (≈ EUR 29,240) and 155,700, but real quotes are individual and depend on the integrator. We have no named Polish deployments in our verified coverage. Before you order, read “How to Buy a Cobot Step by Step” and “Poland's Robotization Tax Relief” (Poland's robotization tax relief, ulga na robotyzację).

Editorial verdict

If you are buying your first cobot, UR is the default choice: a proven platform, plenty of integrators and plenty of knowledge online. You pay for that with the brand and the ecosystem. Before you sign the order, ask for a comparative quote from FANUC CRX and Doosan: differences in the cost of a complete cell can be larger than differences in specifications. Who it suits: small and medium-sized plants, integrators, universities and anyone who values a large installed base.
