Summary

The LEGO Education SPIKE Prime set (45678), a popular tool for teaching robotics and programming in grades 6-8, was officially retired by the manufacturer on June 30, 2026. That comes straight from the LEGO Education website, not from market speculation.

For schools and educational institutions planning purchases, this creates a real supply gap: you have to look for sets on the secondary market or move to the successor in LEGO Education's lineup. The suggested retail price (RRP) according to the Brickset set database was $399.95 / EUR 514.99 / GBP 474.99.

These prices refer to the period when the product was on sale, before its retirement on June 30, 2026; the set is no longer offered for sale. Compared with other educational platforms in the same category, such as the open SO-101 from Hugging Face/LeRobot, SPIKE Prime was a closed, branded solution with a ready-made ecosystem of lessons and teaching support.

The SO-101 requires your own assembly and calibration, but it does not depend on a single manufacturer's decision to retire a product. The status “retired” means the end of availability of new units, not a loss of educational value in sets already owned.

For schools in Poland this means checking with local education distributors whether stock still exists, and considering a successor from the current LEGO Education range.

Price and availability in Poland

Price in Poland from 2,199 PLN (≈ EUR 505) 1 offers from Polish retailers · as of 27 September 2026

Suggested retail price according to the Brickset set database (528 pieces); sales ended on June 30, 2026 ("Retired") according to the manufacturer's website.

Running and deployment costs

The suggested retail price according to the Brickset database was $399.95, EUR 514.99 and GBP 474.99. In Polish stores on September 27, 2026 we saw PLN 2,199 (≈ EUR 505) at alttab.pl and PLN 2,499 (≈ EUR 570) at aramisklep.pl, a gap of almost PLN 300 (≈ EUR 69) on the same set, so compare offers. The list price in euros at an exchange rate of 4.3770 comes to about PLN 2,254 (≈ EUR 515).

Running costs are low: the set needs no servicing or expensive licenses, and spending is usually limited to replacing bricks. As a rough guide, it is worth budgeting extra for teacher training and for tablets or computers for programming if the school does not already have them. Funding for educational sets is worth discussing with the school's governing body; we do not know of a program tied to this particular set.

Applications

What it's for

The LEGO Education SPIKE Prime Set is set 45678 with 528 pieces, intended by the manufacturer for grades 6-8 and for STEM and coding classes: students build a vehicle, program it, and learn why a robot sometimes does something other than what was intended.

It is not a robot for doing work, but a tool for learning. In primary school (schools) it lets students move from bricks to their first programs, and in clubs and after-school activities it works as a base for team projects. At universities (universities) it will rarely be the heart of a lab, but it can be an entry point for students who have never held a servo.

The strength of such a set is that it is a closed ecosystem: bricks, control and teaching materials from a single manufacturer. For a teacher that means less preparation work than with open platforms such as the SO-101. One important point: the manufacturer ended sales on June 30, 2026, so today we are talking about sets from warehouse stock and the secondary market, not a new offering. For wider background, see “Educational Robots for Schools and Universities”.

Typical applications

  • Grades 6-8
  • STEM/coding courses

Who it's for

A good fit: schools and institutions that already have SPIKE Prime sets and want to keep using them, and teachers looking for ready-made lessons for grades 6-8. It also suits parents and robotics clubs who come across used sets for sale.

Not a good choice for: anyone planning a new, long-term purchase. Since the product is retired, you cannot count on replacing missing pieces or on long support in the manufacturer's catalog. Do not buy it for preschoolers either, since simpler robots exist for the youngest, such as the Ozobot Evo, or for students learning machine learning who need a real arm.

If you are starting from scratch, read “How to Start Learning Robotics in Poland”.

Deployments

All we know is that in Poland it could be bought at the stores alttab.pl and aramisklep.pl.

On the market, educational platforms ranging from sets for preschoolers to open arms for machine learning. For comparison, see the NAO, a long-running educational humanoid (58 cm, 25 DOF, about 20,000 units sold), and educational robots.

Comparison

For grades 6-8, the closest in spirit is buying the successor from LEGO Education's current range. We do not cover such a model in our comparison, so check the manufacturer's offering.

Of the models we do describe: the Ozobot Evo is a screen-free robot for children in PreK-2, priced from $175. It suits the youngest, but will not replace SPIKE in an eighth-grade classroom. The myCobot 280 (about PLN 2,516 (≈ EUR 575), 250 g payload) is a real six-axis arm, interesting for high-school and university students. The Dobot Magician is a four-axis desktop arm for programming, 3D printing and engraving, available in Poland through botland.com.pl, among others. The SO-101 is open and cheap, but requires assembly. And if you want a humanoid for your classes, look at the ROBOTIS OP3 (51 cm, 20 DOF, since 2018).

History

The set went on sale in January 2020 as a LEGO Education offering from Billund for grades 6-8. The catalog number 45678 and the 528 pieces come from the Brickset database.

The most important point in this story is the last one: according to the manufacturer's website, sales of the set ended on June 30, 2026, and the product was marked “Retired.” We have no confirmed information about generations or predecessors, so we do not attribute any; that would be guesswork.
