Can you get “almost a Spot” for a fraction of the price? That is the question from teachers, hobbyists, small inspection firms and universities who have seen a video of the Boston Dynamics Spot and the price of the Unitree Go2 in a Polish shop. A price gulf and a gulf in purpose separate them. Spot from Boston Dynamics is a professional platform for industry, energy and construction. The Go2 from Unitree Robotics is one of the most popular robot dogs, aimed at consumers, schools and light research. We explain what you actually get for the price difference, and what you do not.

Design and specifications

Spot weighs 33.8 kg, stands 61 cm and carries 14 kg. The Go2 weighs 15 kg and carries 8 kg. The Go2 is faster, though: 3.5 m/s against 1.6 m/s. Both have 12 joint motors and both run briefly: Spot about 90 minutes on a 564 Wh battery, the Go2 about 1.5 hours on a 230 Wh pack.

The difference shows in toughness. Spot has an IP54 enclosure and an operating range of −20 to 55°C, which lets it work on a construction site or in a mine. The Go2 is lighter and more agile, but the manufacturer offers it as equipment for people, not for full-shift work in harsh conditions. In return the Go2 has a 4D LiDAR with a 360°×96° field of view, an HD camera, voice control based on a GPT-type model and gaits trained with reinforcement learning, features rarely seen at this price. Spot offers a mature software ecosystem, charges in an hour and, according to the manufacturer, lasts 180 minutes in standby. The Go2 comes in three variants: Air (entry level), Pro (stronger motors and sensors) and EDU (for research, with a full SDK and ROS2), so when comparing with Spot check which variant is meant. The Go2's camera and LiDAR call for attention regarding GDPR, which we cover in “Data Security: Robots with Cameras and the GDPR”.

Price and availability in Poland

The Go2 in its Air version starts at about USD 1,600 (Unitree's site), the Pro at USD 2,800, and the EDU version at about USD 11,190. Spot cost USD 74,500 according to 2020 data, which today equals about PLN 288,777 (≈ EUR 66,060); the manufacturer does not publish a price. At starting prices the difference is about 46-fold.

In Polish shops the numbers look different: the Go2 Air costs PLN 9,900–12,000 (≈ EUR 2,260–2,740) (deltarobots.com, drony.net, Botland, x-kom), the Pro about PLN 21,400 (≈ EUR 4,900) (Komputronik, drony.net), and the EDU Standard PLN 35,900 (≈ EUR 8,210). So here the gap to Spot is about 25-fold. Even the most expensive Go2 configurations with an extra LiDAR (PLN 105,000–115,000 (≈ EUR 24,020–26,310)) cost less than half of Spot's estimated price. Differences between shops run to a few thousand zloty, so check the exact variant and kit. You can buy the Go2 from several shops and get an invoice. Spot has no confirmed distributor in Poland. More about the Go2 and prices is in “Unitree Go2 Review: Prices and the Air, Pro, X and EDU Versions”.

Which model for which job

For a school and a university the Go2 is the obvious choice: cheap, available, with an EDU version and ROS2, and enough for technical demonstrations. It also suits light algorithm testing and simple inspections. The Go2 EDU costs PLN 35,900 (≈ EUR 8,210) in Poland, about one eighth of Spot's estimated price.

Spot makes sense where the robot is to work every day for years: industrial inspection, documenting progress on a construction site site, patrols in security. You pay for support, deployment history and the ecosystem. We know of no documented Spot deployments in Poland, however. A Polish example of an inspection robot is the MAB Robotics Honey Badger 4.0, used in Poznań's channels, and an overview of uses is in “Quadruped Robots: Uses in Inspection, Security and Industry”.

Conclusion

The price gap is the key point here: the Go2 Air starts at about $1,600, while Spot costs about $74,500, a difference of roughly 45 times. That shows in what each is for. Spot targets industry, energy, mining and construction with a 14 kg payload; the Go2 is aimed at consumers, hobbyists and light research use with an 8 kg payload. The Go2 is much lighter (15 kg versus 33.8 kg) and faster (3.5 m/s versus 1.6 m/s), but both share the same short runtime of 1.5 hours. The Go2 is genuinely available in Poland from several distributors, including Media Expert, which cannot be confirmed for Spot. For professional industrial inspection with long-term service support, Spot remains the safer choice; for education, hobby use and light algorithm testing, the Go2 offers almost the same experience for a fraction of the price.

Learning, hobby, shows, light research and a budget of up to a few tens of thousands of zloty: the Go2. It is the most sensible start with walking robots, but not for daily industrial work.

An industrial, energy or construction firm that needs multi-year support: Spot, after a trial on your own route. If the task is heavier, also compare the Unitree B2. If you are interested in a cheaper alternative to the Go2, check the DEEP Robotics Lite3. The whole category is described on the quadruped robots page.
