A robot dog that works, not just poses for photos

Spot is a four-legged robot from Boston Dynamics, commercially available since 2020. Unlike cheaper, consumer-grade quadruped platforms such as the Unitree Go2, Spot was designed from the ground up as an industrial tool for inspection, mapping and work in conditions dangerous to people quadruped robots “Quadruped Robots: Uses in Inspection, Security and Industry”.

According to the Boston Dynamics product page Spot weighs about 33 kg, reaches a top speed of 1.6 m/s and has an IP54 rating (dust and water resistance), which lets it work at temperatures from −20°C to 55°C and handle slopes up to ±30°. It runs for an average of 90 minutes on one charge, and its maximum payload is 14 kg. Older datasheets gave slightly different values for weight and temperature range, so check the current documentation before ordering.

What Spot really costs

The base package (Explorer Kit: robot, battery, charger, controller, basic software) cost USD 74,500 in the Boston Dynamics store — a price given by, among others, a 2021 Hyundai Motor Poland press release and Botland. That is a price from several years ago, and it describes a configuration few people actually use in the field. The manufacturer does not publish a full price list for add-ons. An external analysis by Standard Bots says that with a manipulator arm, 360° sensors or autonomy software the total often exceeds USD 100,000, and the final price is set by Boston Dynamics' sales team.

We do not give a table of prices for individual add-ons or a "typical" first-year budget: comparable breakdowns circulating online have no basis in a public manufacturer price list. A real quote has to be obtained from Boston Dynamics or a partner. For comparison, consumer quadrupeds such as the Unitree Go2 cost many times less, including in the EDU developer variant “How to Read a Robot Datasheet”.

Applications in practice

Spot patrols construction sites, scans factory halls and explores disaster zones, serving mainly as a tool for inspection, mapping and automating inspection rounds. According to Boston Dynamics, more than 1,500 robots are in customers' hands, working in the energy industry, on construction sites and at research facilities, among other places.

The main applications include:

  • Industrial inspection: refineries, power plants and offshore platforms, with regular rounds that read gauges and detect thermal anomalies.
  • Construction site monitoring: documenting progress and building 3D maps of a site under construction.
  • Security and surveillance: patrolling closed areas outside working hours.
  • Hazard response: exploring contaminated, post-disaster or high-voltage zones where sending a person would mean risk.
  • Research and development: universities and labs use Spot as a platform for testing their own perception and motion planning algorithms “Humanoid Robots in Factories 2026”.

Corporate customers named include Shell, National Grid, BP and Lockheed Martin (Standard Bots). Individual consumer purchases practically never happen (at a price in the tens of thousands of dollars), which sets Spot apart from cheaper quadruped robots that are also aimed at hobbyists “Humanoid Robot Market Forecasts”.

Why Spot is so expensive compared with the Go2

The price gap between Spot and consumer quadrupeds such as the Unitree Go2 is not just about the brand. Spot has IP54 certification, works over a much wider temperature range (−20°C to 55°C) and is designed for continuous operation in an industrial environment: noise, vibration, dust and rain must not take it out of service during a work shift Unitree Go2. On top of that comes enterprise-class software, which cheaper consumer platforms usually do not offer. That is our assessment, because we found no public price list showing the scope and cost of Boston Dynamics' software modules.

Remember, too, that the purchase price is only the start of the budget: software licenses and technical support usually recur every year, so the total cost of ownership over several years can be noticeably higher than the robot's price alone. Companies considering a deployment should calculate the cost of inspection per work shift, not just the price of the hardware “How Much Does a Humanoid Robot Cost in 2026”.

Alternatives for companies with smaller budgets

Not every company that needs remote inspection has to invest several hundred thousand dollars straight away. Some uses, such as simple patrols, photo documentation and initial site reconnaissance, can be handled by cheaper EDU-class platforms such as the Unitree Go2 EDU or Unitree G1, though these models lack Spot's industrial certification and environmental toughness “Unitree H1, G1, R1 and H2”. The choice of platform should therefore depend on the specific working environment: an explosive atmosphere, high temperatures or outdoor work in all weather practically rule out cheaper consumer alternatives.

Availability in Poland

We found no Polish distributor offering Spot on a permanent basis. Boston Dynamics has sold the robot in the European Union since September 2020, together with a network of integration partners (Boston Dynamics announcement). Hyundai Motor Poland, part of Hyundai Motor Group, which took control of Boston Dynamics in 2021, showed the robot in December 2021 in Hyundai Electrified showrooms in Warsaw, Gdańsk, Poznań and Wrocław. These are image-building activities, not a purchasing channel for companies looking for an industrial inspection robot.

Companies interested in deploying Spot in Poland should contact Boston Dynamics directly or its partners in Europe; we found no confirmed, permanent sales representation serving the Polish industrial market “Polish Robotics Companies”. In practice this means a longer purchasing process: an individual quote, shipping from abroad, and arranging warranty service yourself, unless a local automation integrator offers to handle the whole process as an intermediary.

Renting as an alternative to buying

Given the high entry price, some companies, especially those testing the case for robotic inspection before committing to a permanent deployment, consider short-term rental instead of buying. Boston Dynamics ran a Spot leasing program for selected companies in the past (the Early Adopter Program); we found no current public rental offer for Polish companies, so the terms have to be asked from the manufacturer or an integrator. Such a rental would let a company verify the real return on investment (ROI) at a specific industrial site before deciding to tie up several hundred thousand dollars in hardware that may turn out to be oversized for the plant's actual needs “Renting a Humanoid Robot for an Event”.

Sources and disclaimer

The technical specification comes from Boston Dynamics' product page, the base-kit price from the Hyundai Motor Poland press release and the Botland article (2021), and information on availability in the EU from Boston Dynamics' 2020 announcement. The figures on the cost of deployments with add-ons are an external analysis by Standard Bots, not a manufacturer price list. The full list of sources is above. Prices are in US dollars, excluding tax, customs duty and the integrator's deployment costs; the real project cost depends on the configuration and the customer's location.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the Boston Dynamics Spot cost?

The base package (Explorer Kit: robot, battery, charger, controller and basic software) cost USD 74,500 in the Boston Dynamics store (2021 figures, including a Hyundai press release). The manufacturer does not publish a full price list; according to an external analysis by Standard Bots, with a manipulator arm, sensors or autonomy software the total often exceeds USD 100,000, and the final price is set by the sales team.

Can I buy Spot in Poland?

We found no confirmed official distributor selling Spot directly in Poland. Boston Dynamics has sold Spot in the European Union since September 2020. Hyundai Motor Poland (part of Hyundai Motor Group, which has owned Boston Dynamics since 2021) showed the robot as a display in Hyundai Electrified showrooms in Warsaw, Gdańsk, Poznań and Wrocław in a December 2021 campaign, but that is promotional activity, not a permanent sales channel. A purchase requires contacting Boston Dynamics or an authorized partner.

What do companies actually use Spot for?

Mostly inspection: refineries, power plants, offshore platforms, construction sites and areas too dangerous for people. Boston Dynamics says more than 1,500 robots are in customers' hands; users named include Shell, National Grid and BP (according to Standard Bots), mainly for autonomous inspections such as gas-leak detection.

How long does Spot run on one charge?

The manufacturer quotes an average of 90 minutes of operation on one battery (recharge time about 60 minutes), depending on load and how intensively the robot moves. That is enough for a typical inspection round in an industrial plant.

Can Spot carry tools and extra sensors?

Yes, the maximum payload according to Boston Dynamics is 14 kg; payloads mount on M5 rails with DB25 connectors, and the specific configuration (arm, camera, sensors) depends on the weight of each accessory.
