Tesla is an American automaker based in Austin, Texas, formally operating since 2003, which for several years has been developing the Optimus humanoid robot within its Tesla AI division. Four variants are known: the already cancelled Gen 1, the current Gen 2 (173 cm tall, 20 kg payload, claimed price of $30,000), the conceptual Gen 3 with a 5-hour runtime, and a separate home version at the prototype stage.

None of the models has an established consumer sales channel or a confirmed delivery date, and Elon Musk speaks of a target price close to $20,000, although the current unit cost is far higher. Against the Unitree G1 or Figure 02, Optimus stands out for the scale of capital and manufacturing backing of the parent company, but it has no verifiable performance in real deployments yet.

The robot is not available in Poland.

History and development

Tesla, Inc. of Austin, Texas, formally operating since 2003, is an automaker that has spent several years developing the Optimus humanoid robot within its Tesla AI division. The first prototype was shown at AI Day in September 2022 (Gen 1, 173 cm, 57 kg). In September 2023 Tesla showed Optimus sorting blocks and holding yoga poses, and in December 2023 the Gen 2 with a lighter build and improved hands. In June 2024 Elon Musk spoke of limited production in 2025, and in October 2024, at the "We, Robot" event, he estimated the retail price at around $30,000. In June 2025 Milan Kovac left the program; Ashok Elluswamy succeeded him. In late 2025 Optimus greeted visitors and handed out popcorn in London, then appeared in Berlin. In 2026 things picked up speed: in April Musk announced assembly lines at Fremont and Gigafactory Texas, in August installation of the Fremont line began, and in September the Gen 3 was shown with 22-degree-of-freedom hands, a battery of roughly 2.3 kWh, the AI5 chip and a Grok voice. Supply-chain reports mention a target of about 15,000 units in 2026; these are reports, not a company statement. According to available information, there are still no deliveries to customers.

Portfolio

There are four entries. Tesla Optimus Gen 1 from 2022 was the first prototype (173 cm, 57 kg, claimed payload 20 kg), retired in favor of its successor. Tesla Optimus Gen 2 from December 2023: 173 cm, 57 kg, hands with 11 degrees of freedom, 20 kg payload, estimated price $30,000, but not on sale. Tesla Optimus Gen 3 is listed as a concept: 28 degrees of freedom, 20 kg payload, 5-hour runtime; the data comes from reports, not a spec sheet. The fourth entry is Tesla Optimus, the home plans: a Tesla goal, not a product, with no price, configurator or date, realistically not before the end of 2027. The drive uses electric actuators with planetary roller screws. How such joints are built is explained in “Actuators in Humanoid Robots”; what is known about the model in practice is in “Tesla Optimus: What We Actually Know (as of September 2026)”. Umbrella category: “Humanoid robots”. Anyone looking for specifics instead of promises should compare Tesla's claims with the spec sheets of robots available today; we show such comparisons in our pieces on prices and total cost of ownership, including “Humanoid Robot TCO: How to Calculate Total Cost”. Remember that the Gen 3 data comes from reports and may change.

Market position

Tesla is the only humanoid maker in this lineup that is also a listed corporation (NASDAQ: TSLA). Optimus therefore has no funding round or valuation of its own; its position stems from the capital scale and manufacturing base of the whole company. The key point: Optimus stands out for the size of its plans, but has no verifiable performance yet in real deployments outside Tesla's own factories. The target price Musk mentions is around $20,000, although the current unit cost is far higher. Rivals are Figure AI with BMW as an external customer, Agility Robotics with Digit working in warehouses, Unitree Robotics with the G1 at a fraction of the price, and Boston Dynamics with the electric Atlas. Market assessment and forecasts: “Humanoid Robot Market Forecasts”. For a concrete comparison with the Unitree G1: Unitree G1. In September 2026, supply-chain reports spoke of a pace of about 1,000 units a week by the end of the month; these are again reports, not confirmed deliveries.

Presence in Poland

Optimus is not available in Poland and has no sales channel or Polish representative; all four models are unavailable. Showings outside the US have been rare: Tesla exhibited Optimus in London and Berlin in December 2025, and nothing has reached Poland. We have no documented Polish deployments or university collaborations. If you want to know what a humanoid actually available in Poland costs, rather than waiting for Tesla, see “How Much Does a Humanoid Robot Cost in 2026” and the series comparison “Unitree H1, G1, R1 and H2”. Tesla has a car factory near Berlin, but nothing indicates that Optimus is built there.

Editorial verdict

Optimus is the project with the biggest marketing reach and one of the smallest bodies of confirmed fact. The production lines in Fremont and Texas are concrete, but there are still no customer deliveries, and the home version is a goal for the end of 2027 at the earliest. Recommendation: treat it as a signal of where the market is heading, not as a purchase offer; for a factory in Poland, look at models available today. Applications: “Factories and manufacturing”.
