Summary

Xiao Di is the first humanoid robot from BYD, the Chinese maker of electric cars and batteries, shown in early August 2026 in the brand's Di Space showroom in Zhengzhou. It stands 161 cm tall, weighs 58.5 kg and has 31 degrees of freedom (DOF) in the hands, legs, hips and neck, and a grip with a positioning accuracy of about 1 mm can lift objects up to 1 kg.

It stands out for real-time translation between 6 Chinese dialects and 6 foreign languages, a 360° panoramic camera, and recognition of faces and gestures plus lip reading - features typical of reception robots rather than industrial ones, which places it closer to the Unitree G1 or UBTech Walker S in a greeter role than to production robots.

BYD discloses neither production cost, sale price nor a commercialization schedule - for now Xiao Di greets guests in showrooms and is not a product you can buy. Some of the technical data comes from a pre-launch leak, later confirmed by reports from the show. The robot is not present in Poland.

Running and deployment costs

BYD discloses neither the production cost, nor the sale price, nor the commercialization schedule. The robot is not a product - it is showroom equipment. It is therefore impossible to state a price for Xiao Di. As a rough guide only: humanoids of similar size and similar tasks cost today from about USD 12,000 (EngineAI PM01, about PLN 46,500 (≈ EUR 10,660 at NBP rate 4.3641 of 21 October 2026)) to USD 13,500 (Unitree G1, about PLN 52,329 (≈ EUR 11,990)) in basic versions; versions with extended software, or hired for events, cost differently. Remember that this is an estimate for the class of device, not the price of Xiao Di. Costs beyond the purchase: maintaining the face and speech recognition software, updating the product knowledge base (the robot "explains models," so someone has to feed it current data), mechanical service, and insurance against damage from contact with the public. Applications

What it's for

Xiao Di has one job and does it in front of customers: it greets people in a showroom. It debuted in early August 2026 in the Di Space brand showroom in Zhengzhou - a place where BYD shows its electric cars and new technologies. The robot recognizes the guest's face and gesture, greets them and answers questions about the models. The manufacturer describes three things: greeting guests, explaining models and answering questions. These are tasks on the border of retail and marketing, not production. The most interesting layer is communication. The robot is meant to translate in real time between 6 Chinese dialects and 6 foreign languages, has a 360° panoramic camera, recognizes faces and gestures, and even reads lips - useful in a noisy exhibition hall where a microphone can be unreliable. The body is decidedly "reception-oriented": 161 cm tall, 58.5 kg, 31 degrees of freedom (DOF) distributed across the hands, legs, hips and neck. The grip lifts up to 1 kg with an accuracy of about 1 mm - enough to hand over a brochure, a card or a small gadget, but not for physical work. It is worth understanding what Xiao Di does not do: it does not assemble, carry or work on a line. It is an image robot, in the same role in which humanoids appear at trade shows and in showrooms (events). Its significance is strategic: BYD, a maker of electric cars and batteries, is signaling that it is entering the humanoid game, as Tesla and Xiaomi have done.

Typical applications

  • Greeting visitors, explaining models and answering questions in Di-Space showrooms (debut in Zhengzhou)

Who it's for

Best suited to: market observers tracking how automotive groups are entering humanoid robotics. Organizers of showrooms and exhibitions and marketing departments looking for inspiration on using a robot to greet guests and provide multilingual customer service (hotels). Journalists and analysts of the Chinese market.

Who it does not suit: anyone who wants to buy a robot. BYD gives no price or sales plan, and Xiao Di works exclusively in the brand's showrooms. Not for companies looking for a robot for production or logistics - a 1 kg payload rules out such uses. Not for a Polish car dealership that would like the same effect "from tomorrow": the robot is not available in Poland, and face recognition and lip reading in an EU showroom would require a separate analysis under the GDPR (“Data Security: Robots with Cameras and the GDPR”).

Deployments

The only confirmed place of work is BYD's Di Space showrooms, with the debut in Zhengzhou, where the robot greets guests, explains models and answers questions. Beyond that there is no information on other deployments. In the service robot category, other machines already operate in Poland, described in the piece “Service Robots in Restaurants and Hotels”.

Comparison

For a humanoid to greet, present and serve guests, the choice is wider than it might seem. Unitree G1 - 132 cm, 23 DOF and a 2 kg payload, priced at USD 13,500 (about PLN 52,329 (≈ EUR 11,990)); the cheapest sensible entry point, and also a platform for developers. EngineAI PM01 - 140 cm, 24 DOF, USD 12,000 (about PLN 46,500 (≈ EUR 10,660)), a similar price class. Engineered Arts Ameca - 187 cm and 61 DOF, a robot from Engineered Arts known for its facial expressions, which works where expression matters more than walking. Xiaomi CyberOne - a Chinese design from an electronics group, 177 cm, 21 DOF. For hiring for events, see the piece “Renting a Humanoid Robot for an Event”.

History

BYD is a group founded in 1995 in Shenzhen, known for batteries and electric cars. Its first humanoid appeared late compared with the competition: in July 2026 BYD confirmed that in early August it would show a prototype in Di Space showrooms, and Xiao Di debuted in Zhengzhou. Some of the technical data is known from a pre-launch leak, later confirmed by reports from the show, so some numbers should be treated with caution. The context of rivalry among Chinese companies is covered in “Chinese Humanoid Robots”.
