Hundreds of European university labs use Spain's PAL Robotics TIAGo as a platform for research on perception, navigation, manipulation and human-robot interaction. The design is height-adjustable from 110 to 145 cm, and the robot can be fitted with one or two 7-DOF arms, each with a 3 kg payload, built on the ROS architecture; software openness is its main advantage over commercially closed robots.
Runtime is 4 to 5 hours with one battery or 8 to 10 hours with two, and navigation is handled by a Hokuyo or SICK laser scanner, with an optional force/torque sensor and thermal camera.
Within PAL's own family the robot has a more modern successor, TIAGo Pro, with 23 degrees of freedom and ROS 2 control, while the original TIAGo remains the more budget-friendly choice for teams that do not need the full dual-arm setup. Unlike social robots such as Pepper, TIAGo does not focus on voice interaction but on real manipulation of objects.
The price is not published: PAL sells project by project to scientific institutions, and commercial availability in Poland is not confirmed.

Running and deployment costs
Purchase: no public price list. PAL Robotics sells project by project and on request to research institutions. We do not give a figure. As a rough order of magnitude, not a quote, a research-grade mobile manipulation robot means an outlay in the hundreds of thousands of zloty for a dual-arm configuration; check the actual offer. The bill includes: an additional arm, a force/torque sensor, a thermal camera, a second battery (8 to 10 hours of operation), service and updates. Training is mostly team time: knowledge of ROS is a prerequisite. Universities can fund such purchases from grants, for example from the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR) or the FENG programs.

Applications
What it's for
TIAGo is a wheeled mobile manipulator that hundreds of European labs use for research on perception, navigation, manipulation and HRI. The design is height-adjustable from 110 to 145 cm. The robot can have one or two 7-DOF arms with a 3 kg payload each. The arm is a world of its own: it lets you study grasping, handing over objects, opening doors and working alongside a person. Openness is the main advantage. Everything is built on ROS, so research groups write their own algorithms without fighting closed software. Navigation is handled by a Hokuyo or SICK laser scanner, with an optional force/torque sensor and thermal camera. Runtime is 4 to 5 hours with one battery or 8 to 10 hours with two. Uses: technical universities, research projects (including elder care), robotics teaching, prototypes in company R&D departments. See service robots, educational robots, universities, laboratories and the components Hokuyo and SICK.
Typical applications
Who it's for
Makes sense for: universities, institutes and R&D departments that need a ROS-based mobile manipulation platform. Teams that want to write their own code and publish results. Those who need one or two arms on a budget lower than a full dual-arm configuration.
Who it is not for: companies looking for a ready-made robot for an office or hotel, because TIAGo does not focus on dialogue, unlike social robots such as ARI or Pepper. Those who want to buy off the shelf: the price is not published, and sales are project-based, to research institutions. Those who need more than 3 kg of payload per arm. Commercial availability in Poland is not confirmed. Before buying, read “How to Start Learning Robotics in Poland”.
Deployments
TIAGo's commercial availability is not confirmed, and we have no assignments to specific Polish universities. Globally, according to available information, hundreds of European university labs use TIAGo for research on perception, navigation, manipulation and HRI. That is its main field. In Poland, other educational and research robots are available in the category; an overview is in “Educational Robots for Schools and Universities”. If you are looking for references, ask the manufacturer for a list of institutions.

Comparison
PAL Robotics TIAGo Pro is the successor in the PAL family: 23 degrees of freedom and ROS 2 control. TIAGo remains the more budget-friendly choice for teams that do not need the full dual-arm setup.
PAL Robotics ARI is from the same manufacturer, but oriented toward conversation and reception rather than manipulation.
Pepper is a social robot discontinued in 2024, if HRI teaching is the goal.
temi V3 is cheap (from 4,499 USD, about 17,400 PLN (≈ EUR 3,990 at NBP rate 4.3641 of 21 October 2026)) and good for telepresence, but has no arm.
Boston Dynamics Stretch is a mobile robot with an arm for logistics, in a different price class and application area; choose it when the goal is warehouse work, not research.

History
PAL Robotics has operated in Barcelona since 2004. TIAGo became one of its flagship research products and fills the gap between a mobile robot and a manipulator. Within the family it already has a successor, TIAGo Pro, with 23 degrees of freedom and ROS 2 control. Alongside it in the portfolio are the humanoid TALOS and ARI. The launch date of the first TIAGo is not documented, so we do not give it. Available information indicates that for years the robot has served as a standard in European labs. See PAL Robotics.
