The ergoCub is the successor to the iCub platform, developed by Italy's Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia in Genoa, this time not as a purely cognitive research project but with physical human-robot collaboration on manual work in mind.
It stands 150 cm (4 ft 11 in) tall and weighs 55.7 kg, and its dexterous arms can carry up to 10 kg, even while moving, which sets the ergoCub apart from its predecessor, where walking and manipulation under load were severely limited. The robot moves at a speed comparable to a human's and uses Intel RealSense depth cameras, LiDAR and force-torque sensors to perceive its surroundings.
The project is co-funded by INAIL, the Italian workers' accident insurer, with 5 million euros over 3 years, which points to a practical aim: ergonomics and workplace safety, not just basic science. The same research humanoid segment also includes the iCub, an older, smaller design from the same institute, and commercially oriented projects such as the HMND 01.
The ergoCub remains a prototype, however: no price, no date for any commercialization and no confirmed availability, including in Poland. Its strength is documented progress in walking with a load; its weakness is its still purely research status.
