Boston Dynamics, an American company majority-owned by Hyundai Motor Group, has shown a new production-ready version of its Atlas humanoid, the successor to the hydraulic prototype, this time designed for factory work. First deliveries to customers are planned for 2026, going among others to Hyundai's Robotics Metaplant Application Center and to Google DeepMind.

The group has also announced a separate robot factory near Savannah in the US, with a target capacity of up to 30,000 Atlas units a year from 2028. This is not a standalone Asian manufacturer but part of Hyundai's strategy (listed as KRX:005380) in the humanoid market: Korean capital, American technology. The only model described here is the factory version of Atlas itself.

No data on price or availability in Poland exists, because for now the product does not go beyond selected industrial customers.

History and development

Boston Dynamics is an American company majority-owned by Hyundai Motor Group, which is listed in Korea under code KRX:005380. We cover it together with the group here, because the latest chapter of its history — the move from the experimental Atlas humanoid to a production version — is part of Hyundai’s strategy in the humanoid market. The predecessor, a hydraulic prototype, served mainly to demonstrate capabilities. The new, electric version was designed for factory work and is due to reach its first customers in 2026. The recipients named include Hyundai’s Robotics Metaplant Application Center and Google DeepMind. The group has also announced a separate robot factory near Savannah in the USA, with a target capacity of up to 30,000 Atlas units a year from 2028. This is not an independent Asian manufacturer but an arrangement in which Korean capital meets American technology. We write more about Atlas itself in “Boston Dynamics Electric Atlas”.

Portfolio

One model is described in this entry: Boston Dynamics Atlas, the factory version of Atlas for deployment in Hyundai plants in Korea and the USA, at pilot status. According to our catalog it has 56 degrees of freedom and a 30 kg payload, and the tasks it is intended for are part sequencing, machine operation and order fulfilment. No price has been announced. The company also has other designs on offer, described separately: the electric Atlas, the quadruped Boston Dynamics Spot and the warehouse Stretch (Boston Dynamics Stretch). Spot is covered in “Boston Dynamics Spot: Price, Uses and Availability in Poland”. The wider background of industrial deployments is in “Humanoid Robots in Factories 2026”, and the concept of degrees of freedom is explained in “Degrees of Freedom (DOF) in Humanoid Robots”. This means the first users of Atlas are not retail customers but the group’s own plants and selected research partners. Such an arrangement has advantages: the manufacturer gets feedback from a real factory and can improve the machine continuously. It also has drawbacks from the reader’s point of view, because there is no public data on operating costs, service or battery life. The figures of 56 degrees of freedom and a 30 kg payload come from announcements, not from a datasheet that could be verified. They should therefore be read as the manufacturer’s declaration and compared only once independent tests appear.

Market position

In humanoids Boston Dynamics has an advantage startups lack: an owner with its own factories that can be the first customer. By comparison Figure AI and Apptronik look for industrial partners outside, Agility Robotics concentrates on warehouses, and Tesla builds Optimus for its own plants. Atlas thus follows a strategy similar to Tesla’s, with the difference that Boston Dynamics has decades of experience with walking robots behind it. The announced factory for 30,000 units a year from 2028 is a declaration of scale, not a fact, and for now there are no volumes from which to judge market share. It is also worth remembering that this is a customer programme, not a shop: the first units go to selected industrial recipients. The customer list is so far narrow, which limits any judgement of how Atlas will behave outside the group’s own plants.

Presence in Poland

For a Polish buyer the production Atlas is not yet available. Data on price and availability in Poland does not exist, because the product does not go beyond selected industrial customers. We write about Spot, its uses and prices in Poland in a separate article, “Boston Dynamics Spot: Price, Uses and Availability in Poland”. Polish factories interested in humanoids can follow market developments in “Humanoid Robots and the Polish Labor Market” and in the factory section. For any interested Polish parties this means that contact with Atlas in the coming years will be possible at most through demonstrations, not through purchase.

Editorial verdict

The production Atlas is one of the most serious humanoid projects thanks to Hyundai’s backing, but it is still a pilot-customer programme, not an off-the-shelf product. The announced 30,000 units a year from 2028 should be read as a target, not a fact. For a Polish company it is a topic to watch and plan for later, not to order. Real purchasing decisions will come when a price, service and deliveries outside the group appear.
