With the Dex5-S, Unitree dropped gearboxes altogether. All 22 joints have their own backdrivable direct-drive motor with dual encoders, so the hand can be moved by hand and every axis reports position, speed, torque, temperature, voltage and current. The thumb has 5 degrees of freedom, the index, middle and ring fingers 4 each and the little finger 5 including a roll axis.
The aluminium-alloy body weighs 620 g and measures 102 by 187 by 26 mm, the size of a human hand. Payload is 1 kg continuous and 2 kg peak. Commands cover joint mode, position, speed, torque, stiffness and damping, and collision protection is active on all 22 axes. Connectivity is broad: two 1000BASE-T1 Gigabit Ethernet ports, USB and RS-485, with Ethernet and USB running at 1,000 Hz and RS-485 at 50 Hz.
Power is 15 to 65 V via XT30 with a 200 W peak. Tactile sensing is reserved for the Dex5-S Pro. According to the maker's website, October 2026, pricing starts at 6,350 USD. Among direct-drive hands it undercuts WUJI Hand 2 by a wide margin, and the older Dex5-1 remains the choice when built-in touch matters.
