Force control is no longer the preserve of a narrow group of researchers. Polishing, grinding, fitting parts with clearances of hundredths of a millimetre — these are tasks in which a robot must „feel” rather than merely hit a point. That is why teams choosing an arm for such work compare the Flexiv Rizon 4 with the Franka Research 3. Both have seven axes and a payload in the same class, and both makers stress force sensing. They differ in history: Franka Robotics is a German company founded in 2016 with a long presence in academia, while Flexiv Robotics is a Chinese firm building adaptive robots. This text shows what in these assurances follows from the numbers and what is a slogan that must be checked in a trial.

Design and specifications

Both arms have seven “Degrees of Freedom (DOF) in Humanoid Robots”. The Rizon 4 carries 4 kg, the FR3 3 kg, so Flexiv has a kilogram in hand. The Rizon 4's repeatability is ±0.05 mm, the FR3's ±0.1 mm; by the makers' declarations, the former is twice as precise. The FR3 reaches 855 mm and the Rizon 4 876 mm; the manufacturer's datasheet should still be checked before purchase, following the rules in “How to Read a Robot Datasheet”. The FR3 weighs 18 kg and is 110 cm tall; for the Rizon 4 we have no such data.

The heart of the comparison is sensing. Flexiv describes its own as „intrinsic”: force sensitivity is built into each of the seven joints, which is meant to give near-human touch sensitivity when assembling delicate parts and polishing. The FR3 also has a torque sensor in each of its seven joints and regulates force at 1 kHz. On paper, both arms thus have sensors in the same places, and differences in measurement quality, noise and drift appear only in a test on a specific task. The FR3 adds a controller based on an Intel processor with Linux and open software: the libfranka library and ROS integration. In the larger Rizon 10, with a 10 kg payload, the same idea moves to a heavier class, as the Flexiv Rizon 10 shows. Ready-made external sensors, such as those made by ATI Industrial Automation, are also used to measure forces in robots.

Price and availability in Poland

Neither manufacturer publishes an explicit price. For the FR3, reseller estimates are available: about 25,000–35,000 USD, and one European offer is 25,250 EUR with a delivery time of 17 days; at the assumed midpoint of 30,000 USD this comes to roughly 116 thousand zloty. For the Rizon 4 there is no confirmed figure.

Availability in Poland is confirmed for neither. No local distributor has been named for Flexiv; nor for Franka. This usually means an enquiry to foreign suppliers, delivery measured in weeks and greater uncertainty about service. The general rules for preparing such an enquiry are described in “How to Buy a Cobot Step by Step”.

Which model for which job

The Rizon 4's description includes a use that the FR3's does not list: polishing. This task calls for precise, adaptive pressure control, so if surfaces on your shop floor must be finished and every part has a different curvature, ask Flexiv for a trial on your own parts. Added to that is assembly that needs a feel for force. It is not a robot for plain palletising or carrying heavy loads; for that, arms with a higher payload are better, such as those described in “Universal Robots UR5e, UR10e and UR20 Compared”.

The FR3 is a platform for research on manipulation and force interaction as well as for prototyping, and it fits the work of teams at the university and in the laboratory. When moving from research to production on a factory floor, it counts that the robot has clear documentation and a known user community. In choosing either arm, remember “Robot Safety Standards”: force control in software does not replace a risk assessment of the workstation, especially when the tool is sharp or hot. The class of solution is also described under “Cobots”.

Conclusion

Both arms have seven axes and a payload in the same class (4 kg for the Rizon 4, 3 kg for the FR3). The difference lies mainly in the approach to force sensing: Flexiv describes its sensing as "intrinsic" in every axis, which is meant to give a more natural response to contact with the environment than the FR3's classic torque sensors. Both models target similar segments, industry and research, with polishing listed as an additional application for the Rizon 4 only. Neither manufacturer publishes an explicit price: only market estimates of USD 25,000-35,000 are available for the FR3, and no confirmed figure exists for the Rizon 4. Flexiv is the younger company in adaptive cobots, while Franka has a longer history in academia. For tasks that call for delicate force control when polishing or grinding, the Rizon 4 has a dedicated application advantage.

A plant that finishes surfaces or assembles delicate parts and wants to compare two arms on a narrow pressure-control task should admit the Flexiv Rizon 4 to a trial: it has the higher declared repeatability, more payload and polishing named outright. A research team that values open software, a large number of publications and a quick start thanks to ready examples will choose the Franka FR3 more safely.

Both recommendations carry one caveat: the lack of an explicit price for the Rizon 4 and the unconfirmed availability in Poland make budget planning harder. So do not choose on slogans about „intrinsic” sensitivity. Ask for the same test, on the same part, with the same scope of work, and compare not the brochure photo but the result: cycle time, repeatability and number of stops.

Frequently asked questions

What does Flexiv's intrinsic force sensing mean?

Force sensors built directly into every axis of the arm, giving a fuller response to contact than a single sensor at the tool flange.

Which robot has a confirmed price?

Neither fully. Only market estimates exist for the FR3, and no price is given at all for the Rizon 4.

What additional application suits the Rizon 4?

Polishing, a task that requires precise, adaptive pressure control and is listed explicitly as an application of this model.

Which robot is more precise?

By the makers' declarations the Rizon 4, with ±0.05 mm repeatability against ±0.1 mm for the FR3. In practice this must be checked in a trial.

What is the Rizon 4 suited for?

Polishing and assembly that needs a feel for force. For heavy palletising, arms with a higher payload are better.
