Valkyrie, also designated R5, is a humanoid research robot from NASA's Johnson Space Center, whose prototype was completed in July 2013. Battery life is limited to about an hour, which reflects the experimental rather than production nature of the design.
The robot was built for preparatory tasks ahead of crewed missions and as an assistant during such missions, for example preliminary work in difficult or hazardous environments. In 2015 NASA handed two units to research teams at MIT and Northeastern University together with 500,000 dollars in funding; the machine was later used in the NASA Space Robotics Challenge.
Against other research humanoids of that decade, such as Boston Dynamics' Atlas or Japan's HRP, Valkyrie stood out for its large number of degrees of freedom but trailed them in dynamic motion. The maker gives no payload or walking speed. The robot is not for sale: it is a closed NASA research project, with no presence in Poland and no plans for commercialization.
