Weight First, Camera Second

You choose a first drone differently from a camera. The key number is not resolution but take-off mass. It decides whether you need the A1/A3 exam and mandatory liability insurance, while the EU class decides how close to people you may fly. Only then compare sensor size, gimbal, obstacle sensing and flight time.

The drones catalogue lists 106 consumer drones. 24 carry the C0 class label, and 21 of those have a price from a Polish shop: from PLN 740 (≈ EUR 170) (DJI Neo) with a median of PLN 1,499 (≈ EUR 345) (as of 16 October 2026). This guide covers camera drones for learning to fly and filming. FPV kits are covered separately in “FPV Drone for Beginners (2026)”.

Step 1: Under 250 g and Class C0

A C0 drone under 250 g is the simplest way to start. It needs no exam, only the maker's manual, and it is not subject to mandatory insurance. In subcategory A1 it may fly over individual people, but never over crowds. If it has a camera, the operator must register. Registration at drony.gov.pl is free, and the operator number goes on the drone.

Watch out for Plus batteries. The DJI Lito X1 is C0 with the standard battery and C1 with the Plus battery. DJI gives 249.9 g for the DJI Mini 5 Pro, and with the Plus battery the drone exceeds the C0 mass threshold. The A1/A3 exam and insurance then apply. According to DJI, the Plus battery for the DJI Lito 1 is not supported in the EU. Details in “Drones Under 250 g in Poland”.

A drone above 250 g, such as the DJI Air 3S (724 g, class C1), can also be a first drone if you want a better camera. The pilot then needs the A1/A3 exam and the operator needs a liability policy.

Step 2: Sensor, Gimbal and Obstacle Sensing

Sensor. The smallest sensors in the table measure 1/3 inch (Potensic ATOM SE, Potensic ATOM LT); the largest, 1 inch, is in the Mini 5 Pro. A larger sensor means less noise in the evening and on cloudy days. Almost every model claims 4K, so resolution alone says little.

Gimbal. A three-axis gimbal stabilises the camera mechanically. The DJI Mini 4K, DJI Mini 3, DJI Flip, Lito 1 and Potensic ATOM 2 have one. The DJI Neo has a single-axis gimbal; the DJI Neo 2 and HOVERAir X1 PRO have two-axis gimbals. According to Potensic, the ATOM LT has no mechanical gimbal.

Obstacle sensing. For a beginner this is real protection against the first crash. The Mini 4K, Mini 3 and Neo only have a downward sensor that helps with hovering. The Lito 1 senses all around, and the Lito X1, Neo 2 and Mini 5 Pro add a forward LiDAR. The Flip detects obstacles ahead with a 3D infrared system.

Step 3: Flight Time and What Is in the Box

Makers state maximum flight time in still air, so real flights are shorter. In the table it ranges from 16 min (HOVERAir X1 PRO) to 40 min (Potensic ATOM LT and Potensic ATOM 3). Selfie drones have the shortest times in the table: 16 to 19 min.

Check what comes in the box too. Table prices refer to the cheapest variant at a Polish shop, usually with one battery. A Fly More Combo with extra batteries and a charger costs more: the Lito 1 cost PLN 1,277 (≈ EUR 295) at FlyStore and PLN 1,889 (≈ EUR 435) as a Fly More Combo. The Mini 4K cost PLN 1,242 (≈ EUR 285) at MDRON and PLN 1,789 (≈ EUR 410) as a combo. The Neo can be flown from a phone; with the RC-N3 controller and goggles it uses O4 transmission.

Gross prices from one available offer per model at a Polish shop, in the basic variant. The Potensic ATOM 3 costs this much as a Fly More Combo. Weight, class, sensor and flight time come from the makers' data.

What About a Toy Without a Camera?

For a child or for practising indoors, a small drone without a camera is sometimes enough. The Syma X26PRO weighs 59 g according to the shop and cost PLN 119 (≈ EUR 27) at Megadron on 16 October 2026. A drone under 250 g with no camera and no other personal-data sensors does not require operator registration. The Ryze Tello (80 g, PLN 546 (≈ EUR 125) at MDRON) is meant for first indoor flights and simple Scratch programming. It has a 5 MP camera, so the operator must register. It is no longer in production.

Paperwork Before the First Flight

  1. Register as an operator at drony.gov.pl (PLN 0) and put the operator number on the drone.
  2. Pass the online A1/A3 exam: 40 questions, 75% pass mark, free of charge with unlimited attempts. It is mandatory for drones from 250 g and recommended for C0.
  3. For a drone from 250 g, buy operator liability insurance, from about PLN 70 (≈ EUR 16) a year according to Antyweb and the comparison site Rankomat (as of 16 October 2026). More in “Mandatory Drone Liability Insurance in Poland Since 13 November 2025”.
  4. Before every flight, check in with the DroneTower app and check the zones, as described in “Where You Cannot Fly a Drone in Poland”.

The step-by-step procedure is in “Drone Registration and the A1/A3 Exam in Poland (2026)”, and the differences between classes in “Drone Classes C0–C6 and Subcategories A1, A2, A3 Explained for Buyers”. The full cost of buying and running a drone is in “How Much Does a Drone Cost in Poland (2026)”.

Frequently asked questions

Which beginner drone can I get for up to PLN 1,500?

Several C0 models fit this budget, including the DJI Neo (PLN 740 (≈ EUR 170)), DJI Neo 2 (PLN 946 (≈ EUR 215)), DJI Mini 4K (PLN 1,242 (≈ EUR 285)), DJI Lito 1 (PLN 1,277 (≈ EUR 295)), Potensic ATOM 2 (PLN 1,398.53 (≈ EUR 320)), DJI Flip (PLN 1,449 (≈ EUR 330)), DJI Mini 3 (PLN 1,479 (≈ EUR 340)) and Potensic ATOM LT (PLN 1,499 (≈ EUR 345)) (as of 16 October 2026). They differ in sensor size, gimbal and obstacle sensing.

Do I need a licence for my first drone?

For a C0 drone or an unclassed drone under 250 g the A1/A3 exam is not mandatory; the maker's manual is enough. If the drone has a camera, the operator must register free of charge at drony.gov.pl. The A1/A3 exam is free and recommended.

Is a 4K camera enough for a first drone?

Resolution is only part of image quality. A larger sensor copes better in low light, and a three-axis gimbal stabilises the shot. In our table, sensors range from 1/3 inch (Potensic ATOM SE, ATOM LT) to 1 inch (DJI Mini 5 Pro).

Is the Fly More Combo worth the extra money?

Yes, if you want to fly longer than one battery allows. On 16 October 2026 the DJI Lito 1 cost PLN 1,277 (≈ EUR 295) at FlyStore and the Fly More Combo PLN 1,889 (≈ EUR 435). The DJI Mini 4K cost PLN 1,242 (≈ EUR 285) at MDRON and the Fly More Combo PLN 1,789 (≈ EUR 410).

How old do you have to be to fly a drone in Poland?

The minimum age for operators and pilots is 14. Younger people may fly only under the supervision of an adult with the relevant qualifications. Toys within the meaning of Directive 2009/48/EC do not require operator registration.
