Cassie is the reference point that every humanoid sprint is still measured against, even though it is not a humanoid in the strict sense: the ostrich-legged biped has no torso, arms or head.
Built from 2017 by Agility Robotics, the spin-off of Oregon State University's Dynamic Robotics Laboratory, it measures 115 cm, weighs 31 kg, occupies 55 by 40 cm and has 10 degrees of freedom, five per leg, according to a third-party aggregator. Its controller was trained by reinforcement learning and runs 'blind', without cameras or external sensors.
On 25 July 2021 Cassie became the first bipedal robot to run 5 km, finishing on the Corvallis campus in 53:03 untethered on a single charge, with two falls and a human pilot setting the direction.
On 27 September 2022 OSU announced a Guinness World Record for the fastest 100 m by a bipedal robot: 24.73 s on the Whyte Track, starting and finishing standing and without a fall, equivalent to 14.6 km/h. Units were sold to research institutions from 2017; production has since ended and no price was ever published. The OSU team was led by Devin Crowley and Jonathan Hurst.
For context, the Unitree H1 took the Guinness walking-speed record of 3.3 m/s in 2024, and the Tiangong Ultra ran 100 m in 8.64 s in 2026, though in competition rather than in a certified record attempt.
