UMA, short for Universal Mechanical Assistant, is a Paris humanoid startup led by Remi Cadene, formerly a researcher on Tesla's Optimus programme and on the LeRobot project at Hugging Face. The company came out of stealth in December 2025 and unveiled its first prototype, Northstar, in July 2026.
Press reports speak of around 50 customer conversations and a seed round of roughly 40 million USD, neither confirmed by the company. For 2026 it plans pilot programmes in logistics, manufacturing and healthcare, starting with European factories and warehouses. No robot specifications or prices have been published so far.
