A slope is the most common reason to buy a pricier model

Most robot mowers cope with a flat lawn. Trouble starts on a slope: the mower loses grip, slides when turning or fails to climb and stops with an error. For a garden on a hillside, the slope figure on the spec sheet matters as much as the area rating. This article explains how to read that number, what all-wheel drive adds and which models in the robot lawn mowers catalogue suit which slope. We checked prices in Polish shops on 10 October 2026.

What the slope percentage means

Slope in percent is the rise divided by the horizontal distance, multiplied by 100 (Wikipedia). A 45% slope means the ground rises 45 cm for every metre of horizontal distance. These are not degrees: 100% equals 45°. Makers give both values. Segway and Mammotion convert 45% to 24°, Mammotion converts 80% to 38.6°, and Worx converts 30% to 17°.

You can measure your own slope easily. Lay a 1 m board with a spirit level on the slope, level it and measure the gap to the ground at the lower end. The number of centimetres is roughly the slope in percent. Measure at the steepest point, not in the middle of the bank.

Inside the lawn and along the wire: two different figures

Some makers state two values, and the second one can be much lower. At the boundary the mower turns, and on a sloping edge it can easily slide out of the mowing area. Examples from our data:

  • Husqvarna Automower Aspire R4 and GARDENA SILENO minimo 500 m²: 25% inside the lawn, 10% along the wire,
  • GARDENA SILENO life 1000 m²: 35% inside, 10% along the wire,
  • Husqvarna Automower 310E NERA: 30% inside, 20% at the wire,
  • Husqvarna Automower 308V: 40% inside, 15% at the boundary, even though it works without a wire.

The last example shows that a virtual boundary does not remove the problem. If the slope runs right down to the fence, the boundary figure decides whether the mower will work at all. The other makers in the catalogue give a single number without splitting it into lawn and edge. It is not clear whether it also applies at the edge, so assume the margin is smaller there.

AWD or 2WD

All-wheel drive (AWD) powers every wheel, giving the mower more grip on wet grass and when climbing. The cost is weight and price. In the catalogue, only AWD models claim 80% or more: the Segway Navimow X4, Mammotion LUBA mini 2 AWD 1000, Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD 3000 and Dreame A3 AWD Pro 2500. The cheapest of them, the Mammotion LUBA mini 2 AWD 1000, cost PLN 6,016 (≈ EUR 1,380).

Drive type alone does not settle it, though. The Segway Navimow i205 AWD has three-wheel all-wheel drive and claims 45%, the same as the YUKA mini 2 1000 or the Navimow i215 LiDAR with rear-wheel drive. The Dreame A2 2000, with two wheels driven by hub motors, claims 50%, while the two-wheel-drive Worx Landroid Vision Cloud models claim 30%. Look at the stated percentage and treat the drive type as a hint.

AWD mowers are also heavy: the LUBA mini 2 AWD weighs 15 kg, the LUBA 3 AWD 19 kg, the Dreame A3 AWD Pro 23.9 kg and the Navimow X420 28.8 kg. Carrying one between separate lawns or up steps takes real effort.

Which models handle which slope

The table lists the catalogue models with a stated slope, sorted from the highest value. A dash means the maker gives no separate figure or drive type.

GARDENA SILENO minimo 500 m² 25% 10% — 500 m² PLN 2,299 (≈ EUR 525)

The table falls into four groups. Models rated 25-27% are for flat plots with slight falls. The 30-40% range suits gentle banks, provided the boundary runs on flat ground. Most wire-free mowers claim 45-50%, a sensible choice for a typical hillside garden. Above 50% only four AWD models remain, priced from PLN 6,016 (≈ EUR 1,380) to PLN 11,606 (≈ EUR 2,660).

On 10 October 2026 the Dreame A2 and Dreame A3 AWD Pro were sold out in Dreame's Polish shop. The ECOVACS GOAT O800 and O1200 were marked as awaiting delivery. The GARDENA smart SILENO free 1500 m² has no shopping cart on the maker's site; it is sold through partner shops.

How to mow a slope safely

  • Leave a margin. The spec-sheet figure is a maximum, not an everyday working value. Wet grass, moss and soft ground reduce grip, so choose a model rated above the slope you measured.
  • Run the boundary on the flat. Lay the wire or virtual boundary along a level edge, not halfway down the bank. For models with two figures, the lower one decides.
  • Put the charging station on level ground. The mower has to hit the contacts, and docking on a slope can be unreliable.
  • Check the signal. RTK mowers need open sky. A bank under trees or next to a tall building is better suited to LiDAR models, as we explain in “Wire-Free Robot Mowers”.
  • Secure drops. Exclude walls, steps and ponds at the bottom of a slope from the mowing area. Makers state small obstacles the mower can climb, such as 4 cm for the Navimow i205 AWD and 5.5 cm for the Dreame A3 AWD Pro, not edges it could fall from.
  • Mow when no children or pets are on the lawn. Lift and tilt sensors, found on the Aspire R4, STIGA A 4 and STIGA A 1500 among others, help stop work if the mower tips over. They are no substitute for a sensible schedule.

Summary

A cheap wire-guided mower is enough for a flat garden with a slight fall, but on a slope check the figure along the wire. Many wire-free models under PLN 5,000 (≈ EUR 1,150) handle a typical 45% bank. Steep slopes above 50% are AWD territory, with heavier and pricier mowers. How to match a model to the size of your plot is covered in “Which Robot Lawn Mower for My Garden”, general buying criteria in “How to Choose a Robot Lawn Mower (2026)” and the full cost of buying and running a mower in “Robot Lawn Mower Prices in Poland (2026)”. Frequently asked questions

What is a 45% slope in degrees?

About 24°. That is how Segway and Mammotion, among others, convert it on their mower spec sheets. The percentage is rise divided by horizontal distance, so 100% corresponds to 45°, not 90°.

Is a boundary-wire mower suitable for a slope?

For a gentle one, yes, but makers give two figures for these models. The Husqvarna Aspire R4 and GARDENA SILENO minimo handle 25% inside the lawn but only 10% along the wire, so the wire should run along a flat edge wherever possible.

Is all-wheel drive necessary?

Not always. In our catalogue only all-wheel-drive models claim 80% or more. For 45-50%, mowers with rear-wheel or two-wheel drive also qualify, such as the Mammotion YUKA mini 2 1000 or the Dreame A2 2000.

What is the cheapest mower for a steep slope in the catalogue?

Of the models rated for 80%, the cheapest on 10 October 2026 was the Mammotion LUBA mini 2 AWD 1000 at PLN 6,016 (≈ EUR 1,380) gross in the maker's Polish shop. A 45% rating is already available with the STIGA A 4 at PLN 2,965 (≈ EUR 680) on promotion.

How do I measure the slope in my garden?

Lay a 1 m straight board with a spirit level on the slope, level it and measure the gap to the ground at the lower end in centimetres. That number of centimetres is roughly the slope in percent. Measure at the steepest point.
