A crowdfunded hand with a built-in wrist: Gesture Platforms from Canada ran a Kickstarter campaign for the HW1 in May and June 2026. The unit has 19 joints and 10 active degrees of freedom; fingers bend from 0 to 90 degrees, the thumb to 120 degrees, and the wrist rotates plus or minus 50 degrees and tilts from minus 10 to 40 degrees.
Motors inside the hand act directly or through tendons, with aluminium gears at the key joints. It weighs about 500 g, measures 275 mm and carries 1 kg dynamically or 3 kg statically. An ESP32-S3 runs the 100 Hz control loop, reads motor angle, current and temperature, and talks over USB-C, Bluetooth 5.0 LE or WiFi 4; a Windows app plus Python and C++ SDKs are provided.
The skeleton is fibre-reinforced polycarbonate, the shell ASA, the fingertips Shore 30A silicone under a fabric glove. CNX Software reported in May 2026 backer prices of USD 699 for the launch tier, 849 for early backers and 1,599 for a pair, shipping extra, with deliveries from November 2026. Until then it counts as a prototype; a similarly affordable open design is Handroid.
