PSYONIC grew out of the University of Illinois, where founder Aadeel Akhtar developed a bionic prosthetic hand; the company is now headquartered in San Diego, California, after moving from Champaign, Illinois. Its single product, the Ability Hand, has been sold to amputees since 2019 and more recently to robotics labs as an end-effector with an open API.
