The Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh is one of the largest university robotics centres in the world. The lab of Deepak Pathak published the open-source LEAP Hand at RSS 2023, a four-finger design with 16 Dynamixel servos that is 3D-printed and can be built for about 2,000 USD in parts.

The code is released under the MIT licence, the CAD files under CC BY-NC-SA, with documentation on the project website and in a GitHub repository, which has made the hand a popular platform in robot-learning research.
