Summary

Festo's Bionic Learning Network, working with ETH Zurich, built the BionicSoftHand 2.0 in 2020 as a research demonstrator that replaces motors with compressed air. Pneumatic bellows fingers and rotary modules give the five-finger hand 11 degrees of freedom including a two-axis wrist; it weighs 1,295 g and carries up to 4 kg.

Twelve VTEM piezo valve cartridges meter air at 5 to 6 bar, supported by a DRVS swivel drive and three DSNU cylinders. Sensing is unusually rich for a soft hand: ten bend sensors, an inertial sensor, 14 pressure sensors, 113 tactile force sensors woven into the glove and a depth camera in the wrist.

The bellows are EPDM of roughly Shore 45 with textile reinforcement, while housing and wrist are 3D-printed polyamide. The hand rides on Festo's BionicMobileAssistant platform and is not for sale; price on request. Its 2019 predecessor had 12 degrees of freedom and 24 piezo valves. For a commercially available soft hand compare qb SoftHand2 Research.
